How Socio-Economy Status Was Used in the OJ Simpson Case

O.J. Simpson, born Orenthal James Simpson, was an exceptional football running back from 1969-1980. After retirement from football, Simpson became a sports newscaster, as well as continued as a â€Å"B† rate actor. Although he was a black man, he was accepted due to his accumulated wealth, as an elite white man. He married a beautiful white woman with flowing blonde hair, Nicole Brown. He had two children with Brown-Simpson and appeared to be living happily in Brentwood, California. Simpson was accused of domestic battery multiple times by his wife, which ultimately led to the dissolution of their marriage. On June 13, 2004 Brown-Simpson, as well as a male acquaintance, was found murdered outside of her home in Brentwood. Suddenly, the cameras were trained on Simpson, not for a feat in the game of football, not for a sports analysis, and not for an orange juice or car rental commercial; rather he is the main suspect in the death of Brown-Simpson and Ronald Goldman, both of wh om are white. In this paper I will argue, that O.J. Simpson’s socio-economic status afforded him, or his legal team, the opportunity to change the color of his skin when it benefitted him. Race has divided this county since the days of our founders. Blacks were deemed to be less than a white man. Our country has fought for the rights, or against the rights, of blacks. It is not until contemporary America when blacks have the ‘opportunity’ to compete with the white man. Admittedly, blacks are still treated

The Synthesis Of Apomorphine Was Historically Accomplished...

Introduction: Apomorphine has been used as far back as 2000 BC. In 2000 BC the Mayan’s noticed that the bulb and root of water lilies gave a narcotic feeling, as well as acted as an aphrodisiac and partial hallucinogen.1 Apomorphine belongs to a class of molecules called aporphines which are present in water lilies, more specifically in Nymphaea caerulea and Nymphaea ampla.1 While mild effects were shown in parts of water lilies, scientists wanted to know what exactly caused these effects. The compounds were isolated and tested to determine that apomorphine was the most active ingredient. The concentration of apomorphine was so low in the plants that isolation was impractical so a synthesis was designed to investigate the properties of apomorphine further; leading to apomorphine being used for Parkinson’s disease, erectile dysfunction, and most recently Alzheimer disease. Synthesis2: The synthesis of apomorphine was historically accomplished by an acid-catalyzed rearrangement of morphine. This method typically had low and varying yields: anywhere from 0.6% to 46% yield. In 2008, a new synthesis was patented that shown yields as high as 55% to 70% yield. This new synthesis, scheme 1, uses phosphoric acid as the catalyst and phosphorus pentoxide as a water scavenger—water is the by-product of the reaction and the phosphorus pentoxide irreversibly binds to the water. The solution would then be heated to 90-100â„Æ' in an inert atmosphere for two hours.

Religion vs Science Essay Example For Students

Religion vs Science Essay This paper will examine the scientific view verse religion. I feel their support for the big picture is shallow and untenable. I believe in science but I also have faith. Scientific research has lead to dramatic and more humane treatments of persons suffering from mental disease, depression, and physical injury. The reputation of scientists has reached an all-time high.Majority of Americans have said they trust the scientific community more than almost anyone, including the Supreme Court, organized religion, Congress, teachers and the U.S. military. Many of these Americans believe that these scientific advances are leading them to a better world. The questions: What is man? What am I to do? What am I to hope for? A number of scientists and their fans seem to consider these questions to be the clearest manifestations of the human spirit or our nescient childhood. The scientists said â€Å" Now that we are scientists, we can put away childish things, including the concepts of God, the human soul and the moral responsibility.†An advocate of this view, M.I.T. Professor Steven Pinker, argues that science is itself an evolutionary development of the brain. He claims the mind evolved to provide just experimental accounts of the world. He believes that questions of religion and philosophy about the meaning of the world and human existence, are not truly meaningful ones. Pinker said, â€Å" religion and philosophy are but the primitive responses to the unknown.† (Common Wealth p15) There are alternative theories that involve science and religion. For example, Raymo’s â€Å"new creation story.† According to this story, nature did its own creating through unintelligent material processes, particularly the Darwinian mechanism of random mutation and natural selection. He believes that God was only involved in the beginning, in setting up the laws and thereafter nature runs by itself.Raymo viewed humans as the universe becoming conscious of itself through evolution, while prayer consists of miracles, and giving praise and thanksgiving to nature. (National Review p32)Scientists begin to worship their own concepts, proclaiming limitless philosophical systems rather than concentrating on what the data is really showing. Scientists cannot prove that known natural forces can produce complex biological organisms. No one has demonstrated that chemical evolution cannot even begin to account for the information content of the simplest organisms. There is no actual evidence of natural selection having substantial creative power. The only examples available are those of variations in fundamentally sta ble populations. In scientific perspective, molecular revolution has revealed an unforeseen domain of complexity and interaction more consistent with technology than with the mechanical viewpoint. Scientist have come to realize that cells thoroughly protect themselves against the kinds of accidental genetic change that, according to conventional theory, are the sources of evolutionary variability. The current knowledge of genetic change is fundamentally at variance with hypothesis held by neo-Darwinists. Everyone is in search of the their truth. Understanding, the very rich and varied world, in which we live, the need for these insights of both science and religion are necessary. Each is in search of the truth however; they survey different aspects of experience. According to J. Polkingborne, â€Å"scientific facts are never plain, unvarnished observations; to be interesting they must already be interpreted.† That interpretation requires an interweaving of fact and opinion. Religion on the other hand, is concerned with the search for motivated belief. Faith does not involve closing your eyes and believing impossible thing because some unquestionable authority tells them to do so. It is the quest for an understanding of human experience rooted in worship, hope and the history of holiness represented by the great religious figures of world history. .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .postImageUrl , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:hover , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:visited , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:active { border:0!important; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:active , .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8d5801827812ff7a01e1d3b150f1fa1a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Three Colonial Regions EssayScience limits itself to treating the world as an object, which can be manipulated and put to the experimental test. Religion is concerned with personal encounters, which can only be treated as their own reality. The scientific testing has to give way to trusting in the unforeseen. There are many questions, which arise from science but which go beyond its narrow power to answer, which seem to many of us to point in a religious direction. Scientists are extremely impressed by the wonderful rational beauty of the physical world as it becomes revealed through their investigations. Science is possible because the universe is a creation, and we are made in the image of the creator. (Omni p4)Body-soul dualism resides as the core of our culture. The majority of Americans believe the in an immaterial self that comes into the being whole and entire conception and survives the physical erosion of the body. It is extremely enjoyable to believe that we reside at the link of a chain of material creation. Science instead offers, a speck of self, formed from cosmic dust in a meaningless world. (3) Science is not going to go away. It is far too fruitful a way of knowing to be denied by human curiosity. Even if driven underground from its established position, it will survive. There is little chance that science will be suppressed by the dominant culture; it is way to useful. Who is prepared to turn over their medical and technological establishments to revivalists. The source of our intellectual malaise is not science but our lingering commitment to a philosophical dualism that has proven to be scientifically insolvent; therefore, the tension between our way of knowing and our way of believing. Scientific truth says there is no such thing as a disembodied self. Human bodies are a mess of chemicals and our minds are full of electrical circuits. Scientists have examined the human machine and found no ghosts. They understand the genetic self is determined by a chemical code that can be read and amended. Soon, genetic engineers will be able to add or subtract features from our physical selves. Consciousness can be turned on and off or altered chemically. Memories can be jogged electrically. (11) Many of us were raised to believe in a self that only resides temporarily in our physical frame. We were taught the idea that our soul survives our body’s death and lives forever. This idea of immaterial, immortal self is among the most cherished of human beliefs. We strive and cling for this belief, desperately wanting it to be true. Science and religion are very important aspects of our culture. We trust science enough to help us maintain good physical conditions. Many of us rely on religion to maintain healthy morals and inner peace. I am a firm believer in not questioning faith. There are endless possibilities to what might have started human existence. Our culture is based on creation, we learn and understand the values that are embedded in our society. If the Lord had not created the commandments, our life as we know it, we would be surrounded by evil. Faith is the trust in something that we cannot physically see or prove. Faith and spirituality are found in the in the heart of the individuals experience. It is upon the believer t o identify their faith. Spiritual people cannot share their faith with others; it comes from with in. In this paper, it has been hard for me to prove faith because you can’t. If we could prove faith, I wouldn’t be writing this paper. However, I have faith because of something that happened to me a few years ago. I had been an atheist all my life. I had always questioned whether there was or wasn’t a God. There was a time in my life, when I hit rock bottom. I couldn’t deal with anything or make sense of I was here on earth. My life didn’t have much meaning. I had never prayed before this night, I had never had enough faith to pray. Finally, my life was in shambles and everything I tried to do to improve it failed. One night I decided to pray for inner peace and guidance through these rough times I was having. As I started to drift off into sleep, I could hear very faint singing in the background. I remember seeing a white swirling cloud, complimented with the beautiful singing in the background. I can remember thinking to myself, either I am going to die or this a sign from God. The next day, I felt better than I had ever felt. I felt strong and had a desire to improve myself. I will never again question the power of the Supreme Being. I have been filled inner peace, that science could never replace. .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .postImageUrl , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:hover , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:visited , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:active { border:0!important; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:active , .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3 .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u57d875c77f37573a1905a44a933ef1d3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: John Bull the art of a traveling man EssayBibliography:Works Cited Bennett, J (1998). Explore the ways in which the characters of Tybalt and Mercutio are contrasted in the play Essay Example

Explore the ways in which the characters of Tybalt and Mercutio are contrasted in the play Paper Romeo and Juliet is a love story full of contrasts: love and hate; joy and sorrow; light and dark and Montagues and Capulets. The main contrast is between the Montagues and the Capulets; the audience would know from the prologue that there would be a contrast, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. This give the audience an idea of how the families became such bitter enemies; this grudge results in five innocent youths dying, two of whom are Mercutio and Tybalt. The character Tybalt is based on a character from Arthur Brookes poem, where as Mercutio was Shakespeares own creation, to counteract possibly with the villainous Tybalt. Tybalt and Mercutio do not actually meet onstage until Act 3 Scene 1 when they fight; Shakespeare could have done this with the intention that when it came to them meeting it would be more dramatic. Therefore the audience see the characters develop and are able to imagine what would happen if they did ever meet. They are contrasting characters, Tybalt is aggressive; I hate the word,/ As I hate hell, this shows that he does not want to make peace with the Montagues even though he does not know why they hate each other. Whereas Mercutio fights when he thinks it is necessary, because Romeo was not fighting his side, Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher by the ears? This shows how they both fight for something they think is right. On the contrary, both men believe that family honour is important and they will risk their lives and kill to support the family name, To strike him dead I hold it not a sin. Shakespeare suggests that Tybalt believes the family name to be so important th at he would kill someone and would not feel remotely upset. The first impressions of Tybalt show him as an aggressive man, Look upon thy death this shows him as antagonistic, this is because thy death demonstrates to the audience that Tybalt is a man who does not mind if people who are from the house of Montague die. Therefore our first impressions of Tybalt are as a destructive person who is seen by the audience as aggressive because he talks about hell, What is drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word/ As I hate hell, all Montagues and thee. This would have an impact on an Elizabethan audience because they were, on the whole religious and believed in heaven and hell. A comparison to hell showed how much Tybalt despised the Montagues. Tybalt does not want to make peace with the Montagues and he says I hate the word this reiterates the strength of Tybalts revulsion for the Montagues . In contrast, Mercutio is first seen in Act 1 scene 4 and he is seen as fun-loving; Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance. He wants Romeo to join in and not just hold the light. Mercutio also talks about love and dreams and how they are false; Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down. Mercutio does not think that love is sincere and that Romeo is being silly because he thinks he loves Rosaline. He also thinks that dreams are stupid; Which are children of an idle brain, / Begot of nothing but vain fantasy. Mercutio has strong opinions and he is not afraid to say what he thinks, children of an idle brain. His views are a contrast to his personality because he seems so positive and his negativity about dreams and love could be because he was hurt by someone. The audience here can see hidden depths to his character. The main difference between Mercutio and Tybalt is in their speech; Tybalt speaks simply and he gets straight to the point, Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe: / A villain that is hither come in spite. Tybalt gets straight to the point and does not use any poetic language, because he does not think like Mercutio. Mercutio, on the other hand uses figurative language to get his point across; Her traces of the smallest spiders web. Here Mercutio is describing Queen Mabs carriage; Queen Mab is the Queen of dreams. When Mercutio mentions this it would appeal to the Elizabethan audience, because they were superstitious and believed in Queen Mab, perhaps they would have responded to Mercutios speech, until Romeo interrupts him. On the contrary, Tybalt says what he thinks and in simple and aggressive terms, As I hate hell, all Montagues and thee. This shows Tybalt as aggressive because he compares the Montagues to hell. He does not always think about his actions, but he just fights, because he wants to do what he thinks is right; To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? This shows that he is jumping to conclusions because he thinks that Romeo is only there as a joke and is trying to cause trouble. Therefore he wants to kill him, because he thinks Romeo is abusing the Capulet name, honour of my kin. This shows that Tybalt believes that he is protecting the family name by wanting to hurt Romeo. Although the audience already know what Mercutio thinks of Tybalt, they do not know what will happen when they meet; oh hes the courageous captain of compliments: Mercutio thinks that Tybalt is a man of little words, but his actions speak for his words. Mercutio is saying that Tybalt fights like a dancer, he moves around a lot, but does not do much fighting; he compares sword fighting to music, because they both follow rules precisely. In some interpretations, Mercutio would dance about on stage in an exaggerated manner, to mock Tybalts style. The most key scene in the play is Act 3 scene 1; this is the scene in which Mercutio and Tybalt finally meet and fight. The audience already know what Mercutio thinks of Tybalt from Act 2 scene 4; he fights as you sing prick-song, keeps time, distance and proportion. Mercutio thinks that Tybalt fights like a cat and he fights as if it is a dance. Tybalt does not make the first move; this is surprising because the audience would think that Tybalt would want to fight because the impression of him the audience have is that he is a man who likes to fight. Mercutio insults Tybalt, who responds with his sword; By my heel, I care not shows that Mercutio starts by insulting Tybalt, but Tybalt ignores it at first, because he does not want to fight Mercutio. Even though they are enemies they still use formal language, you shall find me apt enough to that, sir, shows that Tybalt is being polite even when Mercutio is insulting him. The family name is important hence the reason why Tybalt suddenl y becomes aggressive when Romeo enters; thou art a villain. Tybalt calls Romeo a villain because he attended the Capulet party and he is a Montague. Mercutio has family pride too, even though he is not a Montague, he is Romeos friend so he believes that the family name is very important, O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! Mercutio is infuriated because Romeo is not fighting for the family and he is being cowardly and he should be fighting because he is a Montague, men in Elizabethan time thought of it cowardly if one did not fight for their family, therefore the audience would have seen Romeo as dishonouring his family. Tybalt kills Mercutio in a cowardly way, Tybalt under Romeos arm thrusts Mercutio in. Tybalt, on the other hand, kills Mercutio when he is not looking, because Romeo tells them to stop, therefore he did not kill Mercutio because he was endangered it was because he was scared that he would lose a contrast to Mercutios sense of honour and mortality. Tybalt and Mercutio are contrasted in Romeo and Juliet because they show the consequences to a feud which goes back generations. Mercutio is portrayed as a man who has a vivid imagination and the joker of the play, whereas Tybalt is aggressive and he knows what he wants and will go after it until he finally achieves his goals.

The Gift of Speaking in Tongues

The Gift of Speaking in Tongues Introduction The gift of speaking in tongues is one of the gifts that the Holy Spirit bestows to Christians. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised His disciples that He would send them the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the disciples that, â€Å"when the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me† (John 15:26, NIV).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Gift of Speaking in Tongues specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In this view, Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them in testifying about Him, and thus encouraged the disciples that the Holy Spirit would empower them. From the verse, it is evident that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to aid the disciples complete the work, which He had commenced. On the day of Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled His promise when He gave the disciples the gift of speaking i n tongues. Since it happened that the disciples were gathered in one place during the day of Pentecost, â€Å"all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit enabled them† (Acts 2:4). Therefore, this research paper examines the gift of speaking in tongues as presented in the Bible, some Christian assumptions, and how Christians apply in today’s world. The Day of Pentecost The Day of Pentecost clearly portrays an event when the disciples received the Holy Spirit and performed great miracles, which demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus. During the Day of Pentecost, disciples gained the gift of the Holy Spirit, which enabled them to preach to all the people who were in Jerusalem. When the disciples received the gift of speaking in tongues, they spoke in tongues, which are real human languages.1 As the disciples were preaching on the day of Pentecost, the congregation listened to them and wondered wh y the disciples were speaking in their own languages. The people in the congregation wondered, they questioned why the Galileans were speaking in their own native languages (Acts 2:7-8). While some made fun about their speaking, Peter, the disciple, stood up and informed them that the disciples were not drunk, but they were filled with the Holy Ghost who gives them power to speak in other tongues so that they could spread the word of God beyond Israel. Since the event of the Pentecost empowered the disciples to preach the Gospel across all languages, the disciples implored the congregation to repent and receive baptism so that God could forgive them their sins and heal them. Owing to the gift of speaking in tongues, the disciples managed to reach out to many people.Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? Let's see if we can help you! From the Day of Pentecost, the disciples were able to perform great miracles, which shocked Jerusalem. Rulers and leaders of Jerusalem summoned John and Peter before the Sanhedrin and commanded them not to teach, speak, or perform miracles in the name of Jesus. The gift of speaking in tongues empowered the disciples to perform great miracles and wonders, which were similar to that of Jesus. In this view, the event of the Pentecost gives a clear understanding of what it means to gain the gift of the Holy Spirit. Luke and the Gift of Speaking in Tongues Luke presents the event of the Pentecost as a promise that Jesus made before ascending into heaven. Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus met His disciples and assured them that He was going to His Father, and thus they should remain in Je rusalem to receive the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). Hence, the disciples remained in Jerusalem until the Day of Pentecost, when they received the gift of speaking in tongues. However, as disciples further questioned Jesus about the restoration of Israel, Jesus told them to wait for the Holy Spirit who was to baptize them. In the book of Acts, Luke presents the gift of speaking in tongues as a baptism, which enabled the disciples to spread the word of God across the world. Essentially, the gift of speaking in tongues signifies baptism of the Holy Spirit.2 Jesus answered His disciples that, â€Å"but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth† (Acts 1: 8). From the perspective of Luke, the Holy Spirit bestowed immense powers to the disciples so that they could spread the Gospel to the four corners of the earth. Luke also presents the gift of speaking in tongues as a prophetic power that enabled the disciples to discern signs of the times. Speaking in tongues is a form of prophetic speech, which fulfilled the prophecy of Joel in the Old Testament. Given that it is a prophetic speech, Christians should use it in the edification of the church as it prepares for the coming of Jesus, rather than using it for self-glorification. 3 During the Day of Pentecost, Peter told the congregation that the disciples were not drunk with new wine, but were filled with the Holy Spirit. Peter further informed the congregation that God had planned that in the last days, people would prophecy after the Holy Spirit empowers them (Acts 2:17).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Gift of Speaking in Tongues specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In this view, the Day of Pentecost heralds the end times where people would receive the power of prophecy. Thus, in the book of Acts, Luke is trying to prese nt the gift of speaking in tongues as a prophetic power that enables disciples to understand times of the end. Assumptions of the Gift of Speaking in Tongues Although the gift of speaking in tongues is evident in the Bible, there many assumptions that Christians have derived, and thus err in the interpretation of the Bible. In the book of Acts, the congregation confused the speaking in tongues because they thought the disciples were drunk with new wine. Modern Christians have also made numerous assumptions, which have complicated their understanding of speaking in tongues, as a gift of the Holy Spirit. One of the common assumptions is that speaking in tongues only happened during the Day of Pentecost. Such assumption implies that modern Christians would not experience any gift of speaking in tongues because the Pentecost was only meant for the disciples of Jesus. Modern Christians are unable to explain why the disciples existed during the ancient times, but not in the modern society .4 The assumption hinders Christians from experiencing the gift of speaking in tongues in today’s world. Pentecostal churches believe that speaking in tongues is not a human language, but rather unintelligible utterances. Charismatic churches believe that speaking in tongues is a coded language, which requires the interpreter who has supernatural powers to decode.5 Basing on the event of the Pentecost, it is apparent that the congregation heard the disciples speaking in their own languages. If the congregation could hear what the disciples were preaching, it means that they were speaking real human languages, which do not qualify to be unintelligible utterances. The gift of speaking in tongues enables one to speak using intelligible speech like the way the disciples did when they reached out to people from various tribes who were in Jerusalem during the Day of Pentecost.6Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? Hence, speaking in tongues is only important if there are people who can interpret the tongues for the congregation to understand what the Holy Spirit says. Christians also associate speaking in tongues with evil because Paul asserts that the speaking in tongues is an indicator of unbelievers. Although Paul could speak in tongues, he admonished other Christians to speak in languages that people could understand for the benefit of the church. In the book of the first Corinthians, Paul depicts speaking in tongues as unnecessary, if it does not edify the church. Paul argues that it is better for one to speak a few intelligible words that edify the church than to speak thousands of words that edify no one. â€Å"Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers, but for believers † (1 Corinthians 14: 22). Contemporary Christians assign meaning to the speaking in tongues based on community interpretation rather than grammatical hermeneutics.7 Hence, the basis of interpreting the Bible has made Christians to perceive the gift of speaking in tongues as unnecessary. Modern Christians further assume that the gift of speaking in tongues signifies the holiness among individuals. However, they do not have the means of determining if the gift of speaking in tongues is genuine or fake. Pentecostal churches strongly believe that speaking in tongues is central to their dogma because it indicates spiritual growth and development.8 While Paul regards speaking in tongues negatively as an indicator of unbelievers, Pentecostal churches regard speaking in tongues positively as an indicator of spiritual growth. Paul compares the gift of speaking in tongues with prophecy, and admonishes Christians to choose prophecy because it edifies many people. Hence, owing to the subt lety of speaking in tongues, unbelievers abuse it and mislead Christians that they can perform miracles through it. To prevent the abuse of the gift of speaking in tongues, Paul did set rules that two or three people should exercise the gift, and that the speaker must not speak unless there is an interpreter.9 The teachings of Paul, therefore, split Christians into two: those who believe in the gift of speaking in tongues as a human language and those who believe in the gift of speaking in tongues as unintelligible utterances. Application to the Lives of Christians in Today’s World Speaking in tongues has an important application in today’s church because it signifies the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers. In the book of Acts, Jesus informed His disciples to remain in Jerusalem until when they would receive the Holy Spirit as a form of baptism (Acts 1: 8). In this view, Luke indicates that the purpose of the Holy Spirit was to empower the disciples so that they could witness to the word of God and Jesus across the world for the people to understand the Kingdom of God. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter also told the congregation that the disciples had received the power of the Holy Spirit so that they could witness about Jesus. Since on the Day of Pentecost the disciples were able to baptize approximately 3000 people, it indicated that the gift of speaking in tongues empowered teachings of the Gospel. Although speaking in tongues empowers Christians, Paul cautions them to avoid abusing it, and thus advises Christians to use interpreters and seek other gifts of the Holy Spirit that edify the church.10 Both Luke and Paul agree that speaking in tongues entails the use of various human languages, and thus require interpreters to benefit the church. Thus, today’s Christians need to utilize the gift of speaking in tongues as an instrument of preaching the Gospel to all people across the earth. Moreover, speaking in tongues is important t o modern Christians because it signifies the presence of the Holy Spirit and end times. When the congregation wondered why the disciples were speaking in their own languages during the Day of Pentecost, Peter informed them that they were fulfilling what the prophet Joel had predicted. Peter further said that in the end times, God promised to pour His Spirit to the Christians so that they could prophecy and save many people from the corrupt world (Acts 2: 19). This shows that speaking in tongues is a sign that aids Christians to understand the times and prepare well for the coming of Jesus. In the end times, Christians will acquire the gift of prophecy, which makes them to receive â€Å"intelligible and authoritative revelations or messages† that compel them to deliver to the people.11 For the Christian prophets to interpret prophetic messages and deliver them appropriately, they require the gift of speaking in tongues. Thus, the gift of speaking in tongues and the gift of pro phecy are inseparable gifts of the Holy Spirit that the church will receive during the end times as presented by Paul and Luke. Conclusion The gift of speaking in tongues is among the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to the Christian. In the Bible, the Day of Pentecost is an event that demonstrated how the gift of speaking in tongues made disciples to speak in different languages, preach the Gospel, convert people to Christianity, and gain prophetic powers. Luke, Paul, and Peter present the gift of speaking in tongues as the power of the Holy Spirit, which enables Christians to spread the Gospel and prophecy about the end times. Essentially, Christians should use the gift of speaking in tongues in edifying the church rather than self. However, due to varied interpretation of the gift of speaking in tongues, many Christian religions have assumed that speaking in tongues is an ancient power that the disciples only received, entails unintelligible utterances, unnecessary gift because i t is a sign of unbelievers, and a sign of spiritual growth that everyone must attain. Despite such assumptions, the gift of speaking in tongues has great significance to the modern Christians. Thus, modern Christians should apply the gift of speaking in tongues in enhancing the spread of the Gospel and prophecy, which God wants to reveal to the whole world. Information Management - Midterm Assessment Essay

Information Management - Midterm Assessment - Essay Example All these categories should be cohesively used and are vital for the achievement of any enterprise. Different concentrations of analytics give insight to various factors. For example: knowledge on customer preference, location and retention (Farasyn et al. 2011: 67). The biggest weapon that P&G had was arguably top notch analysts who did not take the traditional ways to do things as the one and only rule. Tores, Perssini, McDonald and the rest of the team were a group of forward thinkers, risk takers and a team that valued transparency, qualities that are all paramount in analysis. They did a big job of introducing and encouraging an analytical culture and environment in the company (Davenport, Thomas, Marco Iansiti, & Serels 2013: 5). 1. Provision of up to date data- before analytics was adapted in P&G, historical data was relied upon for analysis and statistics. These meant problems were not seen as they emerged but periodically after the storm had passed. Analytics helped to provide up to date data, all the market changes or consumer behavior changes are easily noted, and problems nipped at the bud as soon as they appeared. An excellent example is seen in the North America Laundry detergent Market case study, if the market growth was not noticed in time, P&G would consequently lose that potential market to competitors had they not addressed the issue of supply in time (Davenport 2006: 98). 2. Marketing strategies- analytics provide a good way to formulate marketing strategies to yield the best result. P&G decided to start with North America, Ohio and roll out to the rest of the regions after studying the consumer’s behavior to the new compact powder. From the findings, the team was able to know which stores to supply a new product with. Even though, initially the sales were difficult to track due to stores that had stocked the older version of
